"c'mon sterling! my grandmother has made better three-pointers than those." coach dilliger yelled while flapping his arms around.
i sighed and took his criticism before picking up another basketball, dribbling, then shooting from the three-point line.
swish!
the gym only had like half the team in it, the other half went to weight-lifting. gabriel was in the weight room. i made him come to practice or threatened to five-star him at the most random times.
"finally sterling, a made basket!"
"you know me coach." i smiled at him while jogging up to get the rebound.
"don't flirt with me sterling, i'm not some girl who's swayed by every pretty smile you give me." coach dilliger warned while pointing at me.
"thank god for that." i joked.
coach dilliger and i had a joking relationship unless he was super pissed at me for messing something up in the game. probably because i'd had been with him since freshmen year and we just got along. he had a personal relationship with all of his players, an essential he considered to have teamwork.
he blew his whistle.
"bates, get those rope-a-dopes out of the weight room."
derek bates ran out of the gym and towards the weight room. derek is a junior who is well-liked among everyone. he's often compared to me in the girls department because we both had a knack for getting girls, young or older.
the rest of the team came in, gabriel walked in, sweating and stood next to me.
"j dog." he nodded at me.
"g man."
we bumped fist.
"alright, we have a big game against mcdurand next week so the rest of the week; drills, drills, drills!" he said. "now. sterling. lead the team fallout."
i proudly walked into the center of the circle. i glanced around at everyone, loving the fact that their eyes were on me.
"who are we?" i asked.
"the L.T. indians!" they yelled back.
"who?"
"the L.T. indians!"
"who's going to win?"
"the L.T. indians!"
"who?"
"the L.T. indians!"
everyone was riled up now.
"on three, L.T. indians hoop squad." pause. "one! two! three!"
"L.T. indians hoop squad!"
we did a grunt then started towards the locker room. in the locker room, the usual conversations erupted: which girls were hot, which girls were on the 'best to get with' list, and we made of the freshmen. my hair was stringy and wet, hanging onto my face because i had just gotten out of the shower and was texting randy on my cell. gabriel was still talking his usual b.s.
"man jess. you keep leading the hoop call, you're soon to be the captain." gabriel laughed while tussling my hair.
"yeah man." i said absent-mindedly. "lets go."
we both stood up and said our goodbyes to the team then walked out to the parking lot.
"where ya headed man?" gabriel asked while pulling out his own cell phone.
"randy's house." i said, finally looking up from my cell phone screen. "you man?"
"home."
"come to randy's house with me." i said while nudging him a bit. "it'll be fun."
randy smiled and motioned as if he was smoking a joint.
"a whole lot of that too?" he laughed.
"maybe." i shrugged, we both knew the answer was 'yes'. "maybe."
"nah man." he sighed while kicking a rock across the parking lot. "i gotta go home and clean up."
"what for?"
"my cousin is coming into town."
a car pulled out of a spot and honked at us before peeling out of the parking lot. we both waved.
"cousin?" i echoed. "who?"
"her name is reese and she's a major ho-bag." he said while rolling his eyes. "now she'll be living with us."
"what for?"
another car pulled out and honked. we waved then started towards my car.
"can i get a ride?" he asked while pulling up his baggy blue jeans.
"to the bus stop." i joked then laughed.
he laughed too.
"yeah. i'll give you a ride home man." i nodded while taking out my keys and unlocked my car.
we threw our bags into the back then got into the car.
"where's lauren?" gabriel asked while buckling his seatbelt.
"like i know." i shrugged while starting the car.
gabriel laughed. i pulled out of the parking space, honked at the boys coming out of the gym. they waved and gabriel flicked them off in response. i peeled out of the parking lot, laughing.
"so tell me more about this cousin." i said while keeping my eyes on the road.
"you only wanna know more cause she's a ho-bag." gabriel smirked while turning on the radio. "am i right?"
"no." i lied just a bit.
that was a partial reason. okay. maybe the entire reason but whatever.
"she's our age and she'll be living in my house, which is completely unacceptable." he sighed. "but she's living with us now because back in new york, she got into some sort of trouble for messing with a thirty-year old guy and they got real serious, real quick. then she started screwing up a lot in school and in life but now they're sending her here to live and straighten up."
"she's our age?" i asked while pulling up to a red light.
"yeah." pause. "anything else you want to know?"
my mind was overflowing with questions but i wasn't going to give gabriel things to make fun of me with.
"nah." i lied while turning up the radio because a song i liked came on.
after thirty minutes of driving and bobbing our heads to music, we pulled infront of gabriel's massive house. he grabbed his stuff from the back and opened his door.
"see ya' at school tomorrow man."
"you want a ride tomorrow morning?"
"nah. i'm probably going to have to drive reese and me." he sighed disappointedly. "i hate sharing my house."
"you probably won't even see her with how big your house is." i joked.
"hopefully." he said before closing the door.
i honked twice before pulling off and waving out of my window. he waved back then jogged up to his house. i drove down the streets on my way to randy's house.
