my face hurt.
really really bad.
i woke up to be blinded by the sun.
my ears were ringing, my face hurt, my eyes stung, and my mouth was unusually salty. i rolled over to find myself in the backyard. i was laid out in my backyard.
because i looked around and noticed the roses that my step-mom planted, the football and basketball that i always left near the garage, and i remembered the song of the wind chimes.
so i blinked hard a few times then licked my lips but my tongue felt really heavy.
i stood up slowly and lost my balance then fell over.
i tried standing up again then stumbled over to the back porch and clutched onto the hand rail. i walked up the stairs then stumbled over to the back door and leaned against it.
"open." i commanded the door.
but it just stayed closed. so i put my hand on the knob and twisted.
i opened it then walked inside and looked around.
the house was empty.
"hello?" i asked and liked the way my voice vibrated. so i did it again. "hello?"
i kept doing this until i realized how hungry i was. so i walked over to the fridge and took out five slices of cold pizza.
i ate them and that was when the phone rang.
i got up then walked over to the phone and picked up.
"hello?"
"jesse man?" a voice laughed.
i started to laugh too and didn't know why. then i realized it was one of my best friend, randy phillips.
"hey randy man. what's up?" i asked with a laugh.
"i was just looking at this pencil eraser..and it...it is sooo awesome!!"
"really?" i asked, interested.
"yeah. i mean. what is up with these erasers anyways?"
"i don't know man." i laughed. "i really don't know."
just then the front door opened and i looked over at it, surprised. but it was only my half-sister, lauren. lauren is fifteen. she has a peach skin tone, freckles covering most of her face, shoulder length dirty blonde hair, light green eyes with spikes of yellow and brown, plump lips, five foot seven, slender, and decent-looking. i guess. she was wearing elmo pajama pants, a white muscle shirt, a peace necklace, and her hair was in a sloppy ponytail on the top of her head. she was yakking away on her cell, as usual.
"so i told jenny who told holden who told greg who told rachel, that i started that rumor when i so totally didn't."
i rolled my eyes and went back to my conversation with randy.
"oh. hey jesse." she said quickly then jogged upstairs.
i nodded at her in response and kept listening to randy talk on about how fascinating erasers are. until lauren jogged back downstairs without her cell attached to her face. she walked over to the fridge but when she passed me, she stopped and looked at me slowly.
"jesse. how much did you smoke this weekend?" she asked, examining my eyes.
"not too much." i shrugged.
"then how come i can smell smoke on you from like twenty feet away?" she asked and pinched her nose.
i shrugged.
lauren and i got along pretty well. although we were on two very different pages. she was all about glitz and glamour. while i was about extreme sports and danger. but lauren and i had a mutual understanding of looking out for one another. like if she stayed out past her curfew, i would make-up a cover story for her. and if i spent a weekend getting wasted at a party, she'd cover for me. things like that.
"you need to take a shower before mom and dad get back from their marriage retreat." she sighed and walked to the fridge and took out a bag of chips. "which is in like, two hours."
"i will." i nodded then put the phone back to my ear.
randy was still talking about erasers.
"hey randy man." i sighed.
"what man?"
"i gotta go and get changed before the parents get back."
"oh. cool man. see ya in school tomorrow."
"yeah."
"bye."
we both hung up and i walked to the stairs.
"oh. and jesse?" lauren said.
"what?" i asked and stopped walking up the stairs.
"what did you do this weekend?"
"i wish i knew." i sighed and continued upstairs.
